    iPhone XR assembled in India

I just observed that the Apple iPhone XR is the same price in India as in the USA. The reason may be that this model alone is Assembled in India under the “Make in India” initiative. It cost Rs.43,000 (USD 650) in the USA, adding the state sales taxes will make it the same as in India (Rs.50,000). Refer the article – Finnish firm Salcomp, a key supplier of chargers for Apple, is investing in it’s Chennai manufacturing facility (the defunct Nokia plant). Compare this with iPhone 11 and all other higher models including iPhone 11 Pro or iMac computers which are more than 25% costlier in India, due to…

  • iPad Multi Window & Snapping feature

Two not useful features in iPad Pro

I am not a fanboy of Apple, yet I like my iPad Pro 2018, it is the best tablet out there – perfect form factor, good battery life, clear audio, the widest range of accessories, the largest selection of fine apps across the three major platforms (iOS, Android & Windows). It is not without its faults. I realised there are two useless (for me) features in #iPadOS and #iPad: 1) The multi-windows support and the gestures needed to get it working (I have 25+ years of experience working with GUI, an experienced programmer, yet I needed to watch 3 YouTube videos to learn it). I am surprised the same ‘press’ and ‘critics’ who…

Tip to fix iOS App update problem

This post is about a simple tip. In my new iPad Pro 11″, after I upgraded to latest iOS 12.3, updated all the installed apps, I was facing a weird problem. Six default apps from Apple were not getting updated. Every time I press Update or Update All, the process will start and stop with no progress. I searched in Apple support, the suggested solutions were to restart the device, to uninstall and to reinstall the app – nothing worked. The apps that were not getting updated were Apple Store, Numbers, Pages, Clips, iTunes U and iMovie – some of them were stuck with updates from last year (7 Nov…

My third iPad in a decade – iPad Pro (2018)

My journey with an iPad started in 2011 with iPad 2, I loved the convenience of the device and just after a year I became sad when my son broke the glass. The next one was an iPad Air 2 that I bought three-and-half years later in 2014. This was the model that I used the most and was my travel companion on many trips around the world. Compared to the original iPad, Air 2 was faster, lighter and had a lightning port which made it easier to connect. This time the shocker for me, came two years later when I lost the device during the Microsoft Ignite 2016 conference,…

What do I use to edit photos and create collages from pictures?

If you are like me who post actively on social media and write regular blog posts, then you are editing lots of photos. Also, on many occasions instead of posting individual photos, you will like to create a collage to tell the stories better. For quick photo-editing say a crop here or adjusting the contrast there, I use the inbuilt Windows 10 Photos App if I am on my PC or Google Photos while posting from my phone.  For anything more, I turn to the gold standard Adobe Photoshop – Currently I use the Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 bought from Microsoft Store as I found not needing the advanced features of the…

Missing my laptop that’s gone for service

#Laptop #GoneForRepair #MissingMyPC

Why Parental Control Apps are a scam?

This is about screen time limit for kids. Irresponsible behaviour by Google and Apple on NOT providing a decent parental control across all their devices sold worldwide. Microsoft has been having a solution for years that largely works for PC, XBOX and (now dead) Windows Phones. Lawmakers in India, say the of Women & Child Development, Government of India should enact laws to force them to do so for devices sold in India. I am a firm follower of capitalism and the free market, but as the recent Facebook data leak episode shows, though these firms are not EVIL, they have no economic incentive to reduce screen usage and regulations…

Better Camera – Google Pixel 2 or iPhone X

I care about the camera followed by battery life in a phone. Rest other features are all commodity and you can install most of what you want as apps – be it on Android or iOS. I am underwhelmed with Google Pixel 2 XL that was announced yesterday, especially with the camera after seeing the photos from reviews. I know it got the highest score of 98 for a smartphone in DXOMark review – to like or not to like a photograph taken with a device is a matter of personal taste. The photos from Pixel 2 as shown in DXOMark review page look weak on the colour reproduction as compared…
