Seeru (சீறு) is a thorough brawn fight film coupled with sister sentiment and a bit of love. The movie started well, then drifted to becoming worse, to suddenly recover the lost ground and end with a pukka commercial climax. The story is about the hero (Jiiva) going after the bad elements in his town, and, then risking his life to save a serial murderer who had helped his sister at a critical moment. While doing it he brings down the powerful and also saves other “sisters” from the clutches of evil; Thank god there were no sexual torture incidents in…

Vaanam Kottattum is a nice film that takes an oft-repeated storyline and makes it engaging. The pace of the screenplay which didn’t dwell on any single happening for long, emotional dialogues that work, the impressive acting by the five lead actors  (Raadhika, Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Rajesh and Balaji Sakthivel) have turned an ordinary film to one worthy of your time. [Update: The film is available on Amazon Prime Video] The story is about two kids growing up with their mother while their father is serving his prison term for murder being realistically told, along with a thread of revenge…

A remarkable film at every level! It is now over a hundred years from the time the first world war ended and 1917 (2019 film) is a fitting tribute to the brave men who fought in the war. The story is based on one told to Director Sam Mendes by his paternal grandfather Alfred Mendes. The film covers the happenings over a day in German-occupied France. Two young soldiers Blake and Schofield of the British army are ordered by their General to deliver an important message that can save the lives of 1600 men including the brother of Blake, who…

Darbar (2020) is an all-out Rajni’s cop film. Throughout the film, Superstar is stylish and his energy level is infectious. Director Murugadoss has given a new year treat to Rajni fans. Beyond that, there is nothing good to be told about the film. The film starts with Aadhithya Arunachalam (Rajinikanth), a supercop, being sent to Mumbai by India’s home minister to rid the city of its drugs and child trafficking. How come Delhi appoint a city’s police commissioner? Maybe, it is an indication to the viewers that the screenplay will be devoid of any logic. The first case of a…

Hero (2019) starring Sivakarthikeyan was on expected lines – a disillusioned young man, taking on the corrupt ‘education’ system and exposing its underbelly – unfortunately there was nothing new being told, or told briskly. The second-half turned out to be dull and made us look forward to the end. Director P. S. Mithran seems confused – whether to show Sivakarthikeyan’s as a super-hero, or to be only a prodigy of Gentleman (1993) Kicha, or as an ordinary man turned to be revolting against the system. From the start, the hero keeps losing to the villain, gets rescued by Arjun who…
