Because of the blockbuster songs Maruvaarthai and Visiri by Darbuka Siva, this film was eagerly anticipated by fans. Enai Noki Paayum Thota (2019) is a typical film from Director Gautham Vasudev Menon. There are fantastic songs, intense romance, police, gangsters, and, of course, Mumbai. It feels like I have watched “Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada” v2 staring a different lead couple. There is nothing new in ENPT and you leave the theatre unimpressed. The entire film is shouldered by Dhanush, who has done a voiceover throughout with nothing left for other characters to act or speak – not even the heroine Megha Akash or…

There are films that turn to be a disappointment half-way through, and, then there are films like Sangathamizhan (சங்கத்தமிழன்) which don’t even try to be interesting. I am surprised how a talented actor like Vijay Sethupathi agreed to an unoriginal slapdash script like this! Murugan (Vijay Sethupathi) is an aspiring actor living in a housing board flat with his father and sisters. He falls in love with Raashi Khanna, who as you would’ve guessed is the daughter of a ruthless, super-rich businessman (Villain 1) who wants to build a polluting copper factor near a village in Tamil Nadu. In his double…

Bigil (பிகில்) was certainly a Deepavali treat for Vijay fans, they have been served with not one, but with nearly three stories for the price of one 3-hour long film. There is little to no connection with the first half and the second half of the film. Why should Director Atlee care for those details, when he has successfully given a “hero” film. The film’s second half has its heart in the right place, with its strong woman empowerment message coming from a mass-hero like Vijay its impact to change peoples heart is immense. Just for that, you need to…

Kaithi (2019) stars Karthi & Narain. A convict-on-parole “Delhi” (Karthi) is tasked with saving the lives of 40 senior police officers in Trichy, drugged and unconscious they are being chased by a blood-thirsty drug gang.  How Delhi is saving them in the typical Kollywood style of using his fists is the story, yes this is certainly improbable to happen in real life, but the premise was interesting and felt different from the cookie-cutter films. Karthi runs with the entire film single-handedly and kudos to him for that. In a few places, the screenplay loses steam, but he manages to resurrect…

Asuran (2019) is a familiar village caste conflict and revenge story, that dazzles you because of the exceptional acting by Dhanush and intense storytelling by Vetrimaaran. Dhanush has been ably supported by Manju Warrier. The second hero in the film was G.V.Prakash Kumar’s spirited background music, it has added a different dimension to every action sequence in the film. Actor Karuna’s son Ken Karunas comes as Dhanush’s second son and the boy shows a lot of promise. Caste and Feudalism are real and painful problems in Indian villages. I wish the Director had presented a ‘different’ perspective to this complex…
