As someone who grew up in the 80s, I have a soft spot for Rajni movies. But I have to say, Jailer (2023) was a disappointment for me. It felt like Nelson didn’t have a clear vision for the story and just threw in some cliches and fan service. The saving grace was Anirudh Ravichander‘s background score was brilliant, giving life to the dull story. Vinayakan was impressive as the ruthless villain, and he hit it outside the park. The comedy bit with Yogi Babu and with the Youtube little star Rithvik was humorous and enjoyable. Mangoidiots gives Jailer a Raw rating.
The first half was a revenge plot delivered by an elderly, but stylish Rajinikanth that was mass in the opening which lost its steam pretty soon. The second half suddenly became an Indiana Jones style, artefact stealing plot, and it was unbearable and even the climax was highly predictable. The small flashback in Tihar jail was particularly good and I wish they had focused more on the jailer character. The guest appearances of Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, and Sunil felt like an attempt to support the pan-India film claim and nothing more.
