    The Apartment (1960)

Feeling thoroughly entertained by a sixty years old film is proof of its timeless storytelling. The Apartment (1960) is one of those movies that wrote the textbook on the rom-com genre that’s popular in Hollywood to date. Wiki says the film is one of the greatest American films of all time and included in the US National Film Registry and it truly deserves it.  This is a definite watch for all movie lovers. CC.Baxter is a clerical staff in a large New York Insurance firm. Taking advantage of his soft demeanour, the superiors in the office make him spare his apartment for their extramarital affairs with the girls in the…

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005) is a science fiction comedy film, an adaption of the classic book of the same title by Douglas Adams, which was originally a radio comedy on BBC. The film tries hard to stay true to the book and borrows some of its original comedy lines too. The story is about Arthur Dent, whose house in Britain is going to be destroyed by the authorities for a bypass project. There comes his friend Ford Prefect, who is writing a book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The two escape earth just before it gets blown up by the contractors of an Alien species called…

    Clear History (2013)

Clear History (2013) is one of those simplest comedy films that don’t try hard and just coasts along – not being bad and neither being good. A good man with bad luck planning to take revenge on his former business partner. The screenplay starts well, but then completely loses its way, to regain a bit in the climax. Benefitting from a good cast, it manages to get a Raw rating and is available on Disney+ Hotstar. Larry David, from Whatever works (2009) and co-creator of Seinfeld, is the protagonist. First, he comes as Nathon Flomm, an eccentric marketing expert for an electric car startup. After a disagreement over the name…

    Don’t Look Up (2021)

Don’t Look Up (2021) is a satirical take on how science is received by the American elite in a post-truth world. It is about two talented astronomers warning the POTUS about a comet that is fast heading towards our planet and the impending destruction and the reaction they get for the news from the general public. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence the movie presents important points for our times to ponder, but as a film, it fails to impress as the screenplay after the first hour comes out dreary & repetitive. Available on Netflix, it gets a Raw rating. Watch the film till the very end; After the credit roll,…

    Ron’s Gone Wrong (2021)

Ron’s Gone Wrong (2021) is an animated comedy movie about a young boy getting a faulty bot as his friend. It presents a mirror to our current society on the obsession kids are having with their online presence on Instagram or Snapchat and its harmful influence on their overall development. As a movie, the screenplay could’ve been a lot more engaging and fresh. The film by 20th-century studios is available on Disney+Hotstar in India and gets my ‘Raw’ rating. Barney Pudowsk is a young boy (about 10-years-old) living with his single father and grandmother. He is an introvert and has no friends. The other kids in his middle school have…

    King Richard (2021)

King Richard (2021) is a familiar story of a young sportsperson succeeding against odds. The film, a biography of tennis star Venus Williams stands out for being told from the point of view of her father Richard Williams – that is the reason for the title. The film starring Will Smith is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and benefits from having Venus and Serena Williams as the executive producers. For an Indian audience, the film is sure to remind the superhit Dangal (2016) which was about a similar loving father raising his two daughters to be successful wrestlers. King Richard gets my rating of Ripe. The character of Richard Williams…

    It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

This month marks the 75th anniversary of one of the greatest films of all time, It’s a Wonderful Life (1946).  No better time to watch it for the first time.  This movie has been a must-watch during the Christmas season for many around the world. I found it to be worth every bit of praise it has garnered, in fact, I cried in joy and gratitude in the climax scene, and I am not the sentimental type. I watched the classic film on Plex Live TV (there may be a free version in your region), the remastered colour version was stunning. It gets my highest rating of Delicious. Don’t miss…

    Sleeper (1973)

Sleeper (1973) is a science fiction comedy by Woody Allen. After being cryogenically frozen, a man from 1973 is woken up two hundred later to find a world with an abundance of comfort and robots but ruled by a ruthless dictator. The story is about whether he will fit into this world?  Will he find his love? which has been told with a humorous style. Even after five decades, I found the film enjoyable, it gets my Ripe rating. The plot of a dictator and revolutionaries reminded me of Mr Allen‘s earlier film Bananas (1971). Woody Allen was at his best when he dresses up as a Robot and walks…
