Dr Kalaignar’s Memorial
சென்னை மெரீனா கடற்கரையில் முன்பு வரை இரண்டு சமாதிகள் இருந்தது – ஒன்று அறிஞர் அண்ணா அவர்களுக்கு மற்றொன்று டாக்டர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அவர்களுக்கு. 2016இல் டாக்டர் ஜெ.ஜெயலலிதாவை இழந்த தமிழக அரசு அவரையும் இங்கேயே அடக்கம் செய்தது. இந்த மாதம் டாக்டர் கலைஞர் கருணாநிதி அவர்களும் இங்கேயே அடக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டார். தற்போது மெரீனாவில் நான்கு முன்னால் முதல்வர்கள் நீண்ட உறக்கத்தில் இருக்கிறார்கள்! நால்வரும் தமிழக மக்களின் நினைவில் என்றேன்றும் இருப்பவர்கள். இன்று கலைஞரின் சமாதிக்குச் சென்றிருந்தேன். மக்கள் வரிசையாக வந்த வண்ணம் இருந்தனர். சமாதி மேடை அழகான மஞ்சள் பூக்களால் அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தது. வருவோர் அனைவரும் செல்பேசியில் படம் எடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர், அது அவர்களின் அன்பைக் காட்டியது, அதில் சிலர் தம்படம் (செல்பி) எடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர், அது தனிப்பட்டோர் விருப்பம் என்றாலும் இறந்துச் சில நாட்களே ஆகித் துக்கம் குறையாத தருணத்தில் அப்படிச் செய்வது மரியாதை குறைச்சலாக எனக்குப்பட்டது – அதனால் நான் தவிர்த்துவிட்டேன். கலைஞர் மறைந்த ஆகஸ்ட் 7ம் தேதி என் பேஸ்புக் பக்கத்தில்…

Kamarajar Memorial House, Chennai
Chennai has many memorial houses where famous personalities had once lived. In the past few weeks, I have been to two of them – Thiru Subramanya Bharathiyar House, Triplicane and Dr MGR Memorial House, T.Nagar. This week I went to Kamarajar Memorial House, T.Nagar (பெருந்தலைவர் காமராஜர் நினைவு இல்லம்). It is one of many two storey bungalows that used be in this part of Madras, built around the early 20th century. This house that Kamarajar had lived during his decades in Chennai was rented by him, after his death Tamil Nadu Government had bought the house from the owner and made it as a museum for the public. Dr MGR Memorial House
Dr M.G.Ramachandran (17 January 1917 – 24 December 1987), fondly called as MGR, is a legendary leader belonging to a category of his own. He was a super successful actor, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for well over a decade, and a philanthropist par excellence in his times. Such was his charisma, that three decades after his demise, Tamil people still remember him fondly and everything associated with him is viewed with a reverence – just go to MGR Memorial in Marina Beach to see scores of people even now placing their ears on his tomb trying to hear his watch ticking. Subramanya Bharathiyar House
நான் பிறந்ததிலிருந்து சென்னைவாசி, திருவல்லிக்கேணி ஸ்ரீ பார்த்தசாரதி கோயிலுக்கு பல முறை சென்றிருந்தாலும், அதன் அருகிலிருக்கும் மகாகவி பாரதியார் நினைவு இல்லத்திற்குப் போன நினைவில்லை. இன்று இதற்காகவே கிளம்பிச் சென்று பார்த்தேன். மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தது. மகாகவி பாரதியார் (Subramania Bharati, a renowned Tamil writer, poet and freedom fighter) சென்னையில் இருந்த போது அவர் வாழ்ந்த வீடு இது, அதைத் தமிழக அரசு 1991ஆம் ஆண்டு வாங்கி, புனரமைத்து 1993ஆம் ஆண்டு மக்கள் பார்வைக்குத் திறந்தது. நல்ல முயற்சி. ஆனால் வெறும் புகைப்படங்கள் மட்டும் தான் இங்கே இருக்கிறது. இந்த மாபெரும் கவிஞரின் எழுச்சிமிகு கவிதைகளைத் தேர்ந்தேடுத்து, பல உலக மொழிகளில் அதன் மொழி பெயர்ப்புகளையும் சேர்த்து, வரும் மக்கள் பார்வைக்குப் படங்களாகவும், புத்தகங்களாகவும், ஒலி ஒளி காட்சிகளாக வைத்திருந்தால் பயனாக இருந்திருக்கும். மகாகவி பாரதியார் நினைவு இல்லம் (Subramania Bharati Memorial Home) இருப்பது திருவல்லிக்கேணி துளசிங்கபெருமாள் கோயில் தெரு (Google map location), உங்கள் வாகனத்தைக் கோயில் வாசலில் இருக்கும் இடத்தில் நிறுத்திவிட்டு வரலாம், இரண்டு…

Dr Jayalalithaa’s Memorial
Visitors from different parts of Tamil Nadu who are coming to Chennai – the state capital, and, tourists visiting the city make it a point to visit Anna Memorial & M.G.R. Memorial, both of them are situated on the north side of Chennai’s world famous Marina Beach. Last year, a memorial for Dr J Jayalalithaa (affectionately called by her followers as Amma) has been built in the premises of M.G.R.Memorial. The memorials are crowded, with people coming to pay their homage and to simply see the place. Today, on my way back from a heritage walk to the High Court of Madras, I paid a visit to Dr JJ’s memorial.

Trip to Udaipur, Rajasthan
I was in Udaipur, Rajasthan for the last 3 days on invitation by a friend and he took me around. On my trip to Udaipur in 2008, I had seen the popular places there including the City Palace of Udaipur, Jag Mandir, Vintage & Classic Cars Museum, Kumbhalgarh Fort & Ranakpur Jain temple. Anna and MGR Memorial
A good part of post-independence, Tamil Nadu state politics and public discussion has been shaped by three people – Arignar Anna (1909-1969), M.G.Ramachandran (1917-1987) and Kalaingar Karunanidhi (1924-). Even, leaving aside the political parties they founded or presently heading, their impact has been profound – all three have served as Chief Minister of the state and have a large number of followers. Taking my son to Government Museum Chennai
After our yesterday’s trip to Integral Coach Factory (ICF) Railway Museum, today myself and my son went to see Government Museum, Egmore (Chennai). It is housed in historic buildings from British time but like many other government buildings poorly maintained. Still its a big tourist destination in Chennai, thronged by people from outside Chennai but shunned by city dwellers. The last I visited after many decades was in 2010 and my detailed post is here. The museum campus houses world-famous portraits of British Governors and treasured paintings of Raja Ravi Verma.
