    Choked (2020)

Choked (2020) directed by Anurag Kashyap had an intriguing plot of a middle-class family with a single breadwinner, a tight budget, suddenly finding large sums of cash. I liked the film and could’ve rated it higher, but mid-way it unnecessarily slows down and strays to demonetization and bank robbery. It is available on Netflix. Sarita Pillai (Saiyami Kher) and her husband Sushant Pillai (Roshan Mathew) are a lovely middle-class couple who have run into money problems due to Sushant’s failed business ventures. Sarita is a bank clerk, who is managing the household, works hard in the bank, and repaying Sushant’s borrowings. This creates friction in their relationship and frequent fights…

    The White Tiger (2021)

The White Tiger (2021) is a movie adaptation of a popular book with the same title. It is about an aspiring youngster from a backward village in India, who gets employed as a driver to a wealthy landlord to then becoming a shrewd businessman. As I had heard from my friends on how good the book was, my expectations for the movie were high, sadly they remained unmet and the film was ordinary to me. It is available on Netflix. The film starts with a business owner Balram Halwai writing to the visiting Chinese Premier Mr Wen Jiabao for a meeting. In the email, he recalls his life journey from…

    Chintu Ka Birthday (2020)

Chintu Ka Birthday (2020) is a Hindi-language drama that is available on Zee5. The entire film happens inside a small house in Baghdad where an Indian family stuck due to the war preparing for their 6-year old boy’s birthday party. In the film there is no action sequences, no chases, no killings, other than a few gunshots and sounds of a bomb-blast – still we are able to feel the outside tensions through audio and dialogues. There was not a single dull moment. There are no good sides or bad sides in the film. None of the characters displayed any heroism or martyrdom and that’s what makes the film stand-out.…

    Tribhanga (2021)

Tribhanga (2021) is an example of a familiar story being made into an engaging watch by having a fine casting, good screenplay and excellent acting by Kajol. Kajol is gorgeous in the film and has single-handedly turned an average film into a good watch. The movie is available on Netflix. The film covers the lives of women across three generations, their struggle, and how their aspirations affect their children. Anuradha Apte (Kajol) is a successful actress, an Odissi dancer and a single mother to Masha (Mithila Palkar). Anu has a troubled relationship with her mother Nayan (Tanvi Azmi), a Sahitya Akademi award-winning writer of repute. The screenplay loosely follows the…
