After noticing the director’s name T.N.Krishna, who directed Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (2006), I sat down to watch the Telugu film Hippi (2019). It is a difficult movie to describe, certainly not in a positive sense. The film starts off as a typical rom-com, with some enjoyable humour in the office scenes. Quickly it turns to be a triangular love story, only to turn again to go on a boyfriend-girlfriend ego trip. Because of this identity confusion, what could’ve been planned as a Telugu version of the super-hit Manmarziyaan (2018),  comes out kaput. What differs from the other Indian films, was…

Manmarziyaan (2018) by Director Anurag Kashyap (who had acted in the Tamil film Imaikkaa Nodigal 2018 and had given many successful films in Bollywood like Gangs of Wasseypur 2012) is an engaging triangular love story. The film centres around a Punjabi girl Rumi Bagga (played by Taapsee Pannu, whose last Tamil films were Kanchana 2 (2015) and Vai Raja Vai (2015)) living in a joint family in Amritsar. She is in love with her boyfriend Vicky (played by Vicky Kaushal) who is hesitant to get engaged, this leaves her with no option but to agree for an arranged marriage with…

Kesari (2019), a Bollywood film starring Akshay Kumar, is based on the brave “Battle of Saragarhi” in 1897. It was a heroic battle with an unimaginable imbalance of odds between the fighting parties – a battle of 21 soldiers of the Sikh Regiment of the British Army against the nearly 10,000 tribesmen from Afghanistan in 1897. Kesari was an engaging and well-made film that sheds light on the pages of history unknown to many outside of Punjab in India  – for this alone the film is worth watching. Not many have read about the historic battle of Saragarhi – maybe…

102 Not Out (2018) had many reasons to intrigue me – story of how a centenarian and his septuagenarian go about with their lives – starring two of the doyens of modern-day Hindi Cinema – Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor- directed by Umesh Shukla whose earlier film Oh My God! (2012) I liked a lot.  I guess I waited for too long for it to be released with English subtitles in Chennai, then I forgot – today, I got to watch the film and enjoyed it thoroughly. Dattatraya Vakharia (Amitabh Bachchan) is a 102-year-old who is young at heart and enjoys life to…

I had watched about 135 movies last year, they include Tamil, English, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi and other language films. From that I have picked the following two categories – Movies to Watch and those to avoid.
