Arulmigu Thirukkutralanathasamy Temple, Courtallam

For the last two days, I have been in Courtallam (குற்றாலம்) and while visiting the main waterfalls, noticed this historic temple in front. It was the Arulmigu Thirukkutralanathasamy Temple, Courtallam. This is a Paadal Petra Sthalam – Appar, Sundarar, Gnanasambandhar and Manikkavasahar, the four great poets, have sung about this place. The presiding deity Lord Shiva is called Kuttralanathar and the Ambal his consort mother Parvathy is called Kuzhalvoi Mozhiammai.

This month was off-season, so there were only a few other devotees apart from us. This was a big temple, reaching the foothills near the main falls.

Wikipedia says “As per another legend, the king of celestial deities, Indra slayed a demon Dwastha, the son of Sukracharya (the Guru of Asuras, the demons) as he was performing a penance to seek superior powers against the Devas. Indra incurred Brahmatti Dosha, a sin attained for slaying the Brahmin. He roamed around a lot of places for doing penance and finally on the advice of Brihaspathi, he landed at Papanasam. Since his sin (Papam locally) was expiated in this place, it became known as Papanasam.”

திருக்கயிலாயத்திற்கு இணையான பொதிகை மலையின் அடிவாரத்தில் பேரருவியின் அருகில் அமைந்துள்ள சிவத்தலமான இத்திருக்கோயில் முன்பு வைணவத் தலமாக
இருந்து, அகத்திய முனிவரால் சிவத்தலமாக மாற்றப்பட்டதாக தல புராணம் கூறுகிறது. அப்பர், சுந்தரர், மாணிக்கவாசகர் மற்றும் திருஞான சம்மந்தர் ஆகிய நால்வரால் பாடப் பெற்ற பெருமை வாய்ந்தது. 64 சக்தி பீடங்களில் ஒன்றான ஸ்ரீ பராசக்தி பீடம் இங்கு அமைந்துள்ளது.

இரண்டாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முற்பட்ட புராதனமான இத்தலத்தில் வழிபடுவதால் பிறவிப்பிணி நீங்கும். மேலும் இத்திருக்கோயிலின் சுற்று பிரகாரத்தில் அருள்மிகு பாபநாதர், அருள்மிகு சொக்கர், அருள்மிகு மகாலிங்கம், அருள்மிகு நாறும்பூநாதர்,அருள்மிகு நெல்லையப்பர், அருள்மிகு மதுநாதேஸ்வரர், அருள்மிகு காசிவிசுநாதர் ஆகியோர் தனி சன்னதிகளில் எழுந்தளி உள்ளதால்,இங்கு வழிபடுவதன் மூலம் எண்ணற்ற சிவத்தலங்களில் வழிபட்ட பலன் கிடைக்கும்.
