Honey, I shrank the server rack

As an IT Services firm we at Vishwak Solutions too have been running many servers on-premise for many years, these servers were handling Directory Services, email, file sharing, collaboration, Development, Testing and other work loads. Till three years back we were having nearly 3 server racks full of server hardware running on-prem. This meant CAPEX cost for procuring, OPEX costs for running, power, power backup, backup storage costs, air conditioning and real estate space. Adding to it was manpower cost for maintaining them. We started moving the workloads one at a time to cloud services: Directory Services: Windows Active Directory to Azure Active Directory for online authentication Email/Calendar/Contacts: Microsoft Exchange Server to Office 365 Exchange Online Collaboration: Microsoft…

    Google Cloud Platform Developer Roadshow

This gave me the advantage to learn from my team on the competitive landscape in the cloud (Amazon AWS). Last week when he was Chennai my friend @Janakiramm (a former Microsoft & Amazon employee), a renowned cloud expert and columnist in GigaOM invited me to “Google Cloud Platform Developer Roadshow” happening in Chennai today.  That’s how I…

    Windows Azure Portal–Trouble logging

At my firm Vishwak Solutions as a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner we were one of the earliest users of Windows Azure & Office365. Initially we used Azure mainly for providing additional scale in production situations. With Windows Azure adding IaaS recently we are nowadays using it more often for Development & Testing scenarios. For one of our internal data capture applications we were using SQL Azure for standalone Database workload. We created a separate Azure account for this purpose using our corporate email ID (abcd@vishwak.com) but provisioned as a Microsoft Account (aka Windows Live ID). Incidentally we are using Office 365 (Exchange Online) as our email service for Vishwak.com. Around…
