In the weeks following the release of Gunjan Saxena (2020), there were reports of the film’s portrayal of the first woman officer in Indian Air Force to be inaccurate and disrespectful. Leaving that aside, I did like the movie a lot, it makes you feel good, which we need in these pandemic days. The film is available on Netflix. The late Sridevi’s daughter Janhvi Kapoor has given a fine performance as the protagonist, IAF pilot Gunjan Saxena. She is aptly supported by Pankaj Tripathi as Anup Saxena, the loving father to Gunjan. The film is based on a true story…

The Sleeping Insect (2020), directed by Yurina Kaneko, is a thriller, that’s streaming for ‘free’ as part of the Japanese Film Festival. A large part of the 60-minute film happens inside a city bus, where we are riding along with the protagonist, a young lady, a musician is following an old woman, after being captivated by a tune she is humming. This leads her to a lovely family. The story is a familiar one, with no new ideas shown, but the style of the film-making, a combination of fervency and casualness at the same time, made it absorbing.

Frequencies (2013) is a British science-fiction film with an interesting plot. In a world where everyone emits a specific frequency, reminding us of a social score, which determines every aspect of their life – love, education, career, wait-time for a train and everything else. For nearly an hour the film proceeds slow, with repetitions of important scenes, making it tiring, but the last ten minutes go bustling. The low-frequency “Zak” is attracted to a privileged high-frequency “Marie”, but every time they come near for more than a minute, bad things happen in their surroundings. But Zak doesn’t give up, he…

The Invention of Lying (2009) is a comedy film with an interesting plot that loses its charm quickly. The film is available on Netflix. The story happens in a world where no human has ever lied, no one is capable of being untruthful and as a result there are no works of fiction too, only documentaries.  In this world, suddenly, one day an average screenwriter discovers he can lie (that word doesn’t even exist in their vocabulary), what happens next is the story? Ricky Gervais as Mark Bellison and Jennifer Garner as Anna McDoogles have tried to do their roles…

The Players (2020)  is an Italian romantic comedy film with a familiar story of husbands cheating on their wives. What’s different in the film directed by Stefano Mordini, was the straying, ranges from fetishes to serious plotting to keep their affairs hidden from their wives. All the four female leads have done their roles well, showing up a wide array of emotions from feeling puzzled, sad, betrayed & angry. Other than being a light entertainment, there was nothing gripping in the screenplay. It is available on Netflix.
