One of the well-known temples in Mylapore, Chennai area is the Sri Alarmelmanga Sametha Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple of the Sri Vedantha Desikar Devasthanam.
The Srinivasa temple has a history of over 350 years. A vigraha of Sri Vedanta Desika was brought from the adjacent Kesavaperumal temple and installed here. Later a vigraha of Lakshmi Hayagriva modelled on the idol of the Mysore Parakala mutt was brought and installed. Apart from them, the temple has ‘sannidhis’ for Sri Srinivasa Perumal, Sri Alarmelmanga thayar, Sri Rama, Sri Lakshminarasimhar, Sri Hayagrivar, Sri Sudarsanar, Hanuman, Sri Andal and Sri Ramanujar.
Every year, the annual procession of the ‘utsava’ moorthy of Sri Srinivasa Perumal is carried in lights, music and splendour through the streets of Mylapore and Royappetah. In one such trip through a street in Royappetah I was blessed to get good ‘darshan’ of the lord and take these pictures.
