Gemini Ganeshanum Suruli Raajanum (2017) is a rom-com starring Atharvaa as Gemini Ganeshan who is known as “காதல் மன்னன்” (King of Romance) and Soori as Suruli Rajan who was the leading comedian in Tamil cinema of the 1970s. The story is a remix of earlier popular films like Premam and Vishal starring Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai, yet, due to the freshness in the screenplay that is possible only by a debut director the film was thoroughly enjoyable; good job by Director Odam Ilavarasu. Gemini is a lover boy who loves 4 girls, at times even 2 girls at the same time, but runs away from getting married. He visits Madurai to invite his former lovers for his upcoming wedding, where he meets a local “fake” gangster Suruli, to whom Gemini tells his flashback over the day.

Atharvaa, from his earlier films like Chandi Veeran and Kanithan, has improved a lot, he is making his presence on screen felt better, yet his expressions and emotions need maturity – I am sure he will get there soon. Even with a beard and spectacles, he looks like a college kid, which suited the flashbacks but is a bit out of place for the present. Regina and Aishwarya Rajesh have done their roles well. In this film too Pranitha appears to me as artificial in her expressions and “Barbie” doll-like in appearance, she is trying too much but doesn’t leave an impact on the audience. As her debut in Tamil films, Aaditi Pohankar has acted nicely. The title song “Ammukutiye” by D.Imman is a great melody, keeps ringing in your ears well after you exit the theatre.

The film had no violence, not much vulgarity and a comedy that worked well in most parts. Overall, a pleasant rom-com to watch.
