I just binge-watched Season 1 of Resident Alien starring Alan Tudyk and I’m loving it! The sci-fi plot is great, but I was even more interested in the stories of the people in the local community. The show is about an alien who works as a local doctor in a small town in America. It’s kind of like Sweet Magnolias, which I also binge-watched, but with an alien. I was also reminded of another TV show called Impastor (starring Michael Rosenbaum), which was about a pastor in a small town in Oregon. I’m trying to resist the temptation to continue with the 16 episodes of Season 2 of Resident Alien. In India, the show is available on JioCinema.

I’m not sure if Kollywood has made any shows like this, but I’d love to find some. Other than R.K. Narayan‘s Malgudi Days, I’m finding it hard to name one. I’m looking for stories about small villages or neighbourhoods, where everyone knows each other. I want to see the love, fear, aspiration, challenges, betrayal, birth, and death of the people who live there.  I know our makers are capable of creating these kinds of stories. They just need to be willing to explore beyond the usual plots about single protagonists, couples, or families.

If you know of any Tamil TV shows that fit the bill, please let me know!

P.S. I’m not using “community” as a euphemism for “caste”.
