Who knew my living room could transform into a gateway to ancient Egypt? Thanks to a YouTube 360-degree video tour, I explored the Egypt Museum in Cairo, marvelling at sarcophagi, mummies, and ancient statues—all without the usual travel headaches like visas or crowds.

My Oculus Quest 2, which I’ve had for five years, has become more user-friendly with recent updates. The passthrough feature lets me see my surroundings, and the outline of my fingers helps reduce queasiness. However, it’s still a bit tricky to use, especially with spectacles. A third-party silicone VR face pad makes a world of difference, ensuring a snug fit and blocking out light.

I discovered that sitting comfortably is the way to go for these virtual tours. YouTube offers a decent collection, though not extensive. I fondly remember the virtual tours of the tombs of Meresankh III and Menna, made available by Egypt Tourism during the pandemic. Those were fantastic and required no special gadgets, but the VR experience is truly unique.

If you’re an explorer at heart and have some money to spare, the latest Quest might be worth a try. Just remember, beyond virtual tours, I haven’t found a compelling use case yet, and you might only use it occasionally.
