    Red Notice (2021)

Red Notice (2021) is an action-comedy that’s available on Netflix and gets a Raw in our Mangoidiots rating. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot the film is about three crooks going after a set of ancient treasures of Cleopatra that’s worth millions of dollars. The film didn’t have much of a story or any surprises, it progresses along expected lines but thanks to the good acting and excellent action sequences, we are kept engaged. The chase scenes in the Rome museum, Russian Prison and the escape scenes in the snow-covered mountain was a treat to watch. Out of the three lead actors, the Wonder Woman star impresses the…

    Lulli (2021)

Lulli (2021) is a Brazilian comedy. It is about a young medical student, Lulli, getting the power to hear people’s inner thoughts – this gives her an advantage in her love life and also complicates it. This was a feel-good film that I liked – the second half was a bit dull. It is available on Netflix and gets a Raw rating. As Lulli, Larissa Manoela comes out as a bubbly girl with aspirations and love. For the Tamil audience, the story will remind them of a comedy skit of Actor Vivek, but this Portuguese comedy handles it differently. Lulli’s mother is shown cooking cakes and pastries that looked mouth-watering.…

    Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021)

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021) is a recent Hindi film starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor.  It is a romantic comedy, of a young bodybuilder discovering his girlfriend to be a trans woman and the resulting shock and disbelief. Director Abhishek Kapoor and Vaani Kapoor has to be appreciated for doing this taboo subject. Though there are a few Bollywood cliches, it is overall well made – I liked the style of narration – there are no victims & villains, no heroism, and no blame on fate. Watch this film to be entertained and educated too, gets a Ripe rating, and is available on Netflix. Ayushman has developed unbelievably his muscles and…

    Clear History (2013)

Clear History (2013) is one of those simplest comedy films that don’t try hard and just coasts along – not being bad and neither being good. A good man with bad luck planning to take revenge on his former business partner. The screenplay starts well, but then completely loses its way, to regain a bit in the climax. Benefitting from a good cast, it manages to get a Raw rating and is available on Disney+ Hotstar. Larry David, from Whatever works (2009) and co-creator of Seinfeld, is the protagonist. First, he comes as Nathon Flomm, an eccentric marketing expert for an electric car startup. After a disagreement over the name…

    Don’t Look Up (2021)

Don’t Look Up (2021) is a satirical take on how science is received by the American elite in a post-truth world. It is about two talented astronomers warning the POTUS about a comet that is fast heading towards our planet and the impending destruction and the reaction they get for the news from the general public. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence the movie presents important points for our times to ponder, but as a film, it fails to impress as the screenplay after the first hour comes out dreary & repetitive. Available on Netflix, it gets a Raw rating. Watch the film till the very end; After the credit roll,…

    Kurup (2021)

Kurup (2021), a Malayalam thriller starring Dulquer Salmaan, is a period film that deserves credit for a fine recreation of the 1980s Bombay, Madras & Persia and for good acting by the lead actors. Sadly, it has not been supported by a worthy screenplay, which was haphazard. I got a feeling I watched three films in the 155 minutes it ran. Kurup is available on Netflix, and it gets my Raw rating. Dulquer has effortlessly carried the role of Kurup, which had multiple identities – first as a trainee Airman, then as the town’s rich man, and lastly as an international arms dealer. He was supported well by Sobhita Dhulipala…

    Minnal Murali (2021)

Minnal Murali (2021) is a Malayalam superhero film directed by Basil Joseph and released on Netflix. I expected it to be an action-packed, daredevil style film, but it turned out to be an emotional drama of love and the loss experienced by two dissimilar people in a town who accidentally acquire superpowers. Tovino Thomas (Kilometers and Kilometers 2020) is the hero, Minnal Murali, but it is the protagonist Guru Somasundaram of Joker (2016) fame who dazzles the audience in every frame with his outstanding acting. I found the screenplay to be fluffy & muddled, yet as this film is a welcome attempt for Indian cinema it gets a Ripe rating…

    Decoupled (TV Series)

Decoupled on Netflix is not your typical “Indian” show. It tries to follow the American comedy-drama shows template of featuring light-touch humour, with a bit of British style satirical comedy thrown in. I enjoy this mixture, as a result, I liked the show and I will give it a Raw, but it may not appeal to you. Also remember, the characters freely utter a lot of profanity and openly discuss sex, a rarity for Indian living rooms – I didn’t find the occurrences out-of-place in the episodes, and I was able to smile at most of them. The show is based on a one-line story of a rich couple with…
