Back in Action, streaming on Netflix, is a standard spy action film with a small twist. While Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx deliver competent performances as former spies, the screenplay fails to engage beyond the first half. Directed by Seth Gordon, the film starts with promise but loses steam, leaving the overall experience underwhelming. Mangoidiots rates it Raw.
The story revolves around Matt and Emily, CIA operatives who give up their identities after a complicated mission. Settling down as a family with two children, their peaceful life is disrupted when their past catches up with them. The plot, though intriguing initially, descends into predictability in the second half. Even the picturesque London backdrop and scenes along the River Thames fail to lift the film from its routine nature.
Cameron Diaz shines in her dual role as a spy and a mother of teenagers, impressing with her action sequences and emotional depth. Jamie Foxx complements her with an equally solid performance. The kids, played by McKenna Roberts and Rylan Jackson, add charm and humour, making their scenes enjoyable.
If you’re in the mood for a formulaic spy action film with a touch of family drama, Back in Action is worth a watch. Just don’t expect any surprises.
