    Rocketry: The Nambi Effect (2022)

Rocketry (2022) is the directorial debut of actor R Madhavan. I saw the Tamil version of the multilingual film, which was also simultaneously made in Hindi & English. I found the movie based on the real-life of ISRO scientist Mr S Nambi Narayanan to be well-made and enjoyable. It had a good dose of patriotism, which is the flavour of the times, it was central to the story and I liked the way Madhavan used the combination of national pride and guilt to narrate a powerful story that is sure to move the audience. I am happy to give the film a Ripe rating. In recent decades, two scientists from…

    Vezham (2022)

வேழம் (Vezham) is a serial-killer mystery film starring Ashok Selvan, Iswarya Menon and Janani. Debut director Sandeep Shyam has played it safe, opting to go with a familiar plot, yet managing to keep us engaged for a long time. We feel fatigued with the long climax and its two twists, had it been avoided the film could’ve left a mark. It gets Mangoidiots rating of “Raw”. The story starts with a gruesome murder in the beautiful woods of Ooty hills. Young lovers, Leena (Iswarya Menon) and Ashok (Ashok Selvan) while returning home on their bike are attacked by a masked killer, Leena dies in the attack and Ashok suffers the…

    Ayngaran (2022)

A young engineer who stays clear of the job market, instead, invents “innovative” gadgets which remind high-school projects for solving everyday problems but fails to get a break. A seven-year-old girl falls into a 200-feet borewell and the entire government machinery under the local collector works day & night to rescue the child, but they keep hitting one barrier after another. A bloodthirsty group of Hindi-speaking thieves who target only the large jewellery stores, they leave no clue, and the Tamil Nadu police department is unable to catch them. The hero grows up inspired by his father, a police constable, and also angry at the system that prevents his father…

    Vikram (2022)

In recent years, the big hero movies in Kollywood have disappointed me. Other than a few exceptions, sequels turn out to be lazy works of the makers. So, I had low expectations for Kamal Hasaan‘s Vikram (2022), a thin sequel to Vikram (1986) and in the same universe as Kaithi (2019). Using a textbook story of a good cop(s) vs drug mafia, but delivering it through high energy and brisk screenplay, Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has surprised me with an entertainer. Mangoidiots rates the film a raw, yet you may want to watch it. The first half of the film was dominated by two brilliant actors, Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi…

    Don (2022)

Sivakarthikeyan in and as Don (2022) is a familiar college film. In Nanban (3 Idiots) we saw the hero, a topper who makes the professors realise what is education, in Don, we see a last-bench student who doesn’t know any subject, doing the same. Even with an unoriginal plot, the director does make us giggle in many places in the first half, and in the climax makes us sentimental, but sadly the film dragged far too long in the second half. With some freshness and a sharp scissor, Don could’ve been a hit, but it manages only a Raw rating. If you like SK then rush to the theatres, others…

    Taanakkaran (2022)

In recent times, Kollywood has produced two “Delicious” movies, Visaranai (2016) and Jai Bhim (2021) that highlighted the systematic flaws in the Indian Police system, which is unable to shrug off its colonial origins. Both the films galvanized the public imagination as well. Taanakkaran (டாணாக்காரன்) starring Vikram Prabhu wishes to join the lineup but falls short due to a narrow plot surface and a documentary feel.  Available on Disney+ Hotstar, the film scores a Raw on the MangoIdiots scale. In 1999, Arivu (Vikram Prabhu) is a new recruit to the Tamil Nadu State Police department and joins hundreds of others in the Police Recruit school (PRS). The PRS is run…

    Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal (2022)

Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal (காத்துவாக்குல ரெண்டு காதல்) is a love story starring Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara & Samantha Ruth Prabhu, directed by Vignesh Shivan. The film was based on a kind of triangular love, an ideal plot for comedy and romance, unfortunately, it fails to impress due to a spiritless screenplay. It gets my Raw rating. Rambo (Vijay Sethupathi) falls in love with Kanmani (Nayanthara) in the morning and with Khatija (Samantha) in the evening, whether he does this knowingly or unknowingly, who is he really in love, do the three live as a trouple are explored in the story. I was expecting tons of humour from the director who made…
