Ken Karunas’ Youth (2026) is a familiar school romance story. The film works because of its uncomplicated screenplay and popular songs by G V Prakash Kumar. Don’t come looking for anything new here. The scenes and the path are familiar, but it all comes together as a feel-good movie that you will enjoy. Mangoidiots gives the film a Ripe.
Praveen is a senior secondary student with no aspirations for his future. He keeps failing in his classes, while his mother goes to great lengths to keep him enrolled in school. One day, he meets a girl in the next classroom and falls in love with her. Soon, his love becomes complicated, and after some struggle, he moves on to find a new love. Whether he succeeds in school or in love is the story.
There is nothing left for imagination or guesswork. The movie progresses pretty much as you would expect. In fact, there are no real twists or turns. Yet, the screenplay stays in its lane, never leaving its tracks, and that is its strength. Ken Karunas, as a director, has succeeded with this approach.
The film is a bit slow in places and could have been trimmed by about 20 minutes. But G V Prakash Kumar’s songs keep up the momentum and make the journey enjoyable.
Ken Karunas has done his schoolboy role very well. Anishma Anilkumar as Kanaga and Devadarshini as Praveen’s mother both leave us impressed with their acting.
