Ticket to Paradise is a classic case of a film not living up to its potential, despite featuring the star power of Julia Roberts and George Clooney. This typical rom-com leans heavily on the stunning visuals of the Balinese landscape, but unfortunately, that’s where its strengths end. The storyline is flat and struggles to hold the audience’s attention. Mangoidiots gives it a raw rating, primarily for the pleasure of watching the lead stars.
The plot revolves around a divorced couple from the USA, who are summoned to Bali by their young daughter, Lily, who plans to marry a local she met just weeks ago. The estranged parents hatch a plan to sabotage the wedding, and the film follows their attempts to do so.
While the premise is intriguing, the characters lack depth, and their actions fail to resonate with viewers. An exception is the character of Wren Butler, played skillfully by Billie Lourd, who leaves a lasting impression despite limited screen time. Kaitlyn Dever is perfectly cast as Lily, the bride, and Maxime Bouttier fits well as Gede, the groom.
In summary, “Ticket to Paradise” is a film that promises much but delivers little beyond its picturesque setting and the charm of its lead actors. It’s a visual treat, but the lack of engaging storytelling and character development makes it a missed opportunity. Catch it on Netflix, it is leaving the platform shortly.
