Mr X (2026) is a Tamil spy action film with a capable cast, a genuinely interesting historical hook, and enough technical competence to make you wish the screenplay had done more with all of it. Mangoidiots gives it a Raw.
The story opens with a lesser-known fact from the world of Cold War espionage. In October 1965, the American CIA and Indian intelligence agencies jointly planted a nuclear plutonium-powered surveillance device in the high Himalayas, aimed at monitoring China. The device was lost in the mountains and has remained untraceable for over fifty years. It is a fascinating starting point. But once that premise is set up, anyone familiar with Indian spy thrillers will be able to guess where the rest of the story goes. The R&AW angle is well-worn territory, and the film does not find a new way through it.
Arya looks exceptionally fit and handles the action sequences with conviction. Manju Warrier is a genuine highlight. Watching her in the climax action sequence is a treat, and she more than holds her own. Gautham Karthik has the screen presence, but is let down by underwritten material. Sarathkumar gets little more than a guest appearance. Anagha, playing Dr Kirthana as Arya‘s love interest, is lovely in every frame. Athulya Ravi, Raiza Wilson, Kaali Venkat, and Jayaprakash all do their part without complaint.
Director Manu Anand, known for FIR (2022), has clearly worked hard here. The technical execution is solid, and the visuals are well put together. But polished craft deserves a stronger foundation. The screenplay loads itself with too many twists that feel neither earned nor surprising. You see most of them coming well ahead of time, and that keeps the film from building any real tension. A tighter, more restrained plot would have served this cast and this premise far better.
Mr X is a film that had the pieces to be something genuinely good. A strong cast, an unusual historical hook, and competent filmmaking all point in the right direction. The screenplay just does not get out of its own way. Worth a watch on JioHotstar if you go in with adjusted expectations.
