In recent months, “The Greatest Of All Times” (GOAT) was one of the most anticipated films in Tamil cinema. With Vijay in dual appearances and Venkat Prabhu at the helm, the film generated a lot of buzz. For the most part, the team has delivered enough to satisfy fans and the general audience. However, had they focused on crafting a fresher storyline and better songs, it could have been a film to remember for all time. For its entertainment value, Mangoidiots rates it as Ripe, but it’s not meant for the discerning viewer. The movie is set to release on Netflix soon.
I watched the film at Rohini Theatre in Koyambedu, and the atmosphere was electric with fans whistling, throwing paper, and dancing in the aisles. Without that energy, the film might have felt a bit duller to me.
The plot revolves around Gandhi (played by Vijay), an anti-terrorism agent of India, who handles dangerous missions unbeknownst to his loving wife and five-year-old son. One mission, in particular, haunts him, and he has only himself to blame. Whether he succeeds in resolving it and at what cost forms the crux of the story.
GOAT is equally a Vijay and Venkat Prabhu film. The subtle humour sprinkled throughout the first half was enjoyable. The younger (created finely by de-ageing AI technique) Vijay‘s mannerisms and body language are reminiscent of his roles in “Sachien” and “Ghilli,” and they are a treat to watch. Sneha, as Anu, Gandhi’s wife, performs her role admirably. Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, and Jayaram deliver what is expected, with Prashanth getting slightly more screen time. Mohan, as Menon, the villain lacks depth and dimension. The protagonist’s motives are unconvincing as if the makers assumed fans wouldn’t mind these details. Ajmal Ameer, Vaibhav Reddy, and Yogi Babu make good use of their opportunities, while Meenaakshi Chaudhary meets the expectations of her role.
In summary, “GOAT” is a film that entertains but doesn’t leave a lasting impression. It’s a fan’s delight but might leave critics wanting more.
