Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. (TV Series 2021-)

As a teenager, in the early 1990s, there were two TV shows on the then new private entertainment channel (Star Plus) in India that I watched with great interest and absolutely loved: One was the Wonder Years (1988-1993) which was a coming-of-age family comedy [Available on Disney+Hotstar] starring Fred Savage as the young boy Kevin Arnold; and the other was Doggie Howser, M.D. (1989-1993) starring Neil Patrick Harris playing the namesake as a 14-year Doctor and a child prodigy. Growing up watching them, these two are classics to me, and I felt sceptical when I read both are being remade this year. The former is produced by ABC, and I am…

    Annabelle Sethupathi (2021)

Story is the King! Forget it on your peril. Annabelle Sethupathi (அனபெல் சேதுபதி) is a (semi) historic ghost comedy that proves an entertainer can’t be made only with a great cast of shining stars. Only when the Director combines them with a good story and a fitting screenplay, a good cinema is made. The Taapsee Pannu, Vijay Sethupathi & Yogi Babu starer, available on Disney+Hotstar, gets my lowest rating of ‘Rotten’. A family of petty thieves (Radhika Sarathkumar, Rajendra Prasad, Taapsee Pannu) are tasked by the local police inspector to spend a week in an abandoned palace. Inside, ghosts from a single multi-generational family along with their chief cook (Yogi…

    The Big Bull (2021)

If the early 1990s were about India’s economic liberalization and the dormant animal spirits being unleashed by (then) Prime Minister Mr Narasimha Rao and Mr Manmohan Singh, the period also came to symbolize the stock market scam led by Late Mr Harshad Mehta. A third-party biopic based on this story is The Big Bull (2021), starring Abhishek Bachchan. The film didn’t capture the nuances of the scam, but it was mostly fast-paced and entertaining. It gets a Mangoidiots rating of ‘Ripe’ for being a story that had to be told and for some fine acting by Abhishek. Available on Disney+Hotstar. From being nearly penny less to becoming India’s most powerful…

    Teddy (2021)

Teddy (டெடி) is an action thriller featuring a teddy bear that’s alive as an important character along with Arya and Sayyeshaa in the lead roles. It gets a Mangoidiots rating of “Raw”. Available on Disney+ Hotstar. Sayyeshaa, a college student helps a road accident victim and gets hurt, getting herself admitted to a private hospital, she disappears. Then a teddy bear comes into the life of Arya, a super-brilliant individual who can learn any topic in months and master it. How they solve an international crime network is the story. The teddy bear animation has come out well, kudos to the team for that. Arya has done the action sequences…

    Bhoomi (2021)

“Forgetfulness is a national disease” says the multinational villain belittling Indians in the film Bhoomi (2021). If you are suffering from the same illness then you will like the film. I found the film starring Jayam Ravi – a talented actor I like – to be a knock off of the season’s fashion. In the last few years for Kollywood, it is a hero who has been successful abroad to return to India to save the farmlands, farmers and innovate organic farming. The film is available on Disney+Hotstar. Bhoominathan is an accomplished scientist and a NASA astronaut who is scheduled to farm the Martian surface. Before his three-year return trip…
