“Forgetfulness is a national disease” says the multinational villain belittling Indians in the film Bhoomi (2021). If you are suffering from the same illness then you will like the film. I found the film starring Jayam Ravi – a talented actor I like – to be a knock off of the season’s fashion. In the last few years for Kollywood, it is a hero who has been successful abroad to return to India to save the farmlands, farmers and innovate organic farming. The film is available on Disney+Hotstar. Bhoominathan is an accomplished scientist and a NASA astronaut who is scheduled…

Soul (2020) is a perfect way to get your mind away from the craziness of the year. The film is about a middle-aged Joe Gardner, who has been struggling for years to break into the world of Jazz, which he is passionate about. How he discovers himself while helping a girl in the out-of-the-body world forms the story. The film is available on Disney+ Hotstar. I liked the fact the protagonist was shown as an African-American, a rarity in animation films and a first for Pixar (as per Wikipedia). Though the film reminded me of earlier Pixar works like Inside…

Avenue 5 (2020) is a sci-fi comedy from HBO available on Disney+Hotstar in India. It is about a spacecraft that’s travelling around planets in the solar system carrying thousands of holiday-goers on an 8-week cruise. As imaginable, something bad happens and they are stuck in space for the next three to four years before they can return to earth. Adding to the mix, the ship is piloted by an incompetent crew and an eccentric & stupid billionaire. Watching the first episode, I was expecting a science fiction but what I got was some non-sensical science and dark comedy. I thought,…

There are movies whose upcoming release generates a lot of excitement, but only a few live up to the levels.  Mookuthi Amman (மூக்குத்தி அம்மன்) written and co-directed by RJ Balaji and starring Nayanthara not only meets the expectation but exceeds it. It is a clean comedy that can be enjoyed with the family. The story is a familiar one, of God coming down to earth to bless & work with one of his/her devotees. The credit roll acknowledges being inspired by Bruce Almighty (2003) and others, but I could see the influence of Oh My God (2012) and PK (2014)…

If you want to understand the tech giants and the startup ecosystem in the valley of this decade, then don’t miss this TV Series. Future historians will refer to this show to understand the Silicon valley microcosm. Though the last episode of this famous TV series aired on 8th December, I watched it only today. I didn’t wish to say goodbye to Pied Piper, its CEO Richard Hendricks, Gilfoyle, Dinesh, Jared and rest of the misfits running Silicon Valley companies. The HBO series started in 2014 with a young coding wizard ‘Richard’ presenting at TechCrunch Disrupt with his super cool…
