This evening, I attended a kid’s birthday party at Lafayette by Mug Cakes, a boutique cake shop and eatery on Kothari Road, off Sterling Road in Nungambakkam, Chennai. Nestled in a quiet neighbourhood, this area has been steadily transforming into one of the city’s upscale locales, which made for a pleasant backdrop. The restaurant has a serene ambience with plenty of street parking and a valet service for convenience. I liked the small outdoor garden seating, which felt refreshing in Chennai’s cooler winter evenings. Indoors, the space is air-conditioned and has a cosy café-style vibe. There are also a few private rooms, one of which was used for the intimate birthday party I attended, with about 10 adults and a handful of kids.
Lafayette offers a wide menu that includes Continental breakfast, burgers, pizza, pasta, salads, and desserts. However, there are limited main-course options for vegetarians like me, and I found it tricky to navigate the Christmas specials, which were largely non-vegetarian.
I tried the Broccoli and Almond Soup, priced at ₹325, but it didn’t leave much of an impression. The portion was decent, but the soup lacked any distinct flavour or any broccoli pieces. On a positive note, the birthday cakes—eggless by request of the host—were delightful. They were well-made, with a nice texture and good taste, proving that the place lives up to its reputation for cakes.
While I didn’t explore much beyond the soup and the cakes, the menu does appear extensive, though not particularly vegetarian-friendly. I left shortly after wishing the birthday boy and handing over the gift.
I might consider returning to try their vegetarian pasta or pizza, along with a coffee, but this visit didn’t leave me overly excited about the options available for someone like me.
