In the ever-evolving world of technology, it’s easy to assume that AI can do almost anything. But can it read the stars? I decided to find out by asking four leading Generative AI apps to determine my moon sign based on my birth details. The results were… illuminating.

Prompt:
"What is the moon sign for a person born in Chennai India on the
15th August 1947 12PM. Validate the answer in another way and confirm."
  • After thinking, and reasoning for a whole minute, Open AI o1-Preview spit out complex details of planetary positions at the time of my birth, then did a whole set of mathematical calculations to say confidently my moon sign was Aries.
  • Anthropic Cladue Sonnet 3.5, gave me details that the moon changes sign every 2.5 days and briefed me on calculating the moon’s sign, then it concluded this: “Without access to a real-time calculator, I cannot provide a definitive answer. However, based on the date, there’s a good chance the moon sign is Scorpio or Sagittarius.
  • Then Google Gemini 1.5 Pro, gave a page of explanation on how to calculate the moon’s sign myself, then it ended with “A professional astrologer can offer the most accurate interpretation by considering all astrological factors.
  • Lastly, I came to Open AI GPT4o, which said “You can use an online moon sign calculator, such as the ones mentioned” and ended with “By following these steps and using multiple sources, you can confidently determine that the moon signs for a person born on 15th August 1947, at noon in Chennai, India, is Cancer.
  • Curiously, as I tried GPT4o again from a different app, it replied the following, adding the Tamil name of the sign as well, “Result: Using standard ephemeris for the time and location, the moon was in Pisces (Meena Rashi) on 15th August 1947 at noon in Chennai.
