    Trance (2020)

Trance (2020) is a Malayalam drama starring Fahadh Faasil, a struggling motivational speaker named Viju who gets recruited as a religious preacher by a big scam group. I liked the first half of the film where Viju struggles with his emotional baggage from tragedies in his family while not losing hope about becoming successful. The second half was dull and needlessly lengthy and becomes the usual hero vs bad guys story. Gets a Mangoidiots rating of ‘Raw’. Is available on Amazon Prime Video. The way ordinary Viju Prasad is transformed to Pastor Joshua Carlton (JC as in Jesus Christ!) was enjoyable. If Director Anwar Rasheed had maintained the flow this…

    Kilometers and Kilometers (2020)

Kilometers and Kilometers (2020) is a comedy road Malayalam movie starring Tovino Thomas and India Jarvis.  The film is about an American lady going on a tour of India with a Malayalam guide & driver on his Enfield bullet. The plot could’ve been used to narrate colourful stories but runs dry and on expected lines, manages a “Raw” Mangoidiots rating because of a good cast and their acting. It is available on Netflix. Joseman (Tovino Thomas) is having a tough time making ends meet and pay the loans towards his house and his sister’s higher education. He loves his Bullet bike and takes good care of it. One day he…

    Kozhipporu (2020)

Kozhipporu, meaning Chicken Fight is a Malayalam comedy film that is about two families, who are neighbours and close friends but turn foe due to a few missing eggs. The film is entertaining but has nothing that we haven’t seen in other films with a similar plot. Directors Jinoy & Jibit have done a good job of transporting us to the neighbourhood where the story happens. The film gets a mangoidiots rating of “Raw”. It is available on Amazon Prime Video. The film starts with a few friends on bikes chasing after their enemies in the next neighbourhood – indicating the film is about familiar rivalry between the youngsters from…

    Drishyam 2 (2021)

Drishyam 2 (2021) is a sequel to a hit film that actually works, big applause for director Jeethu Joseph for achieving the impossible in Indian cinema. The lead couple Mohanlal and Meena have repeated their successful performance. I was never a fan of the original (I had watched the Tamil version Papanasam), in my opinion, it was clinically made and trying hard to be real but was not, the sequel follows the same formula invoking similar feelings in me. Available on Amazon Prime Video. The second-half in Drishyam 2 is all about the suspense, so I will refrain from revealing the happenings. In this Georgekutty (Mohanlal) continues his efforts to…

    The Great Indian Kitchen (2021)

The Great Indian Kitchen (2021) is a mirror to many of the Indian households. The film is sure to leave a lasting impact on the audience, it did for me. Director Jeo Baby deserves credit for building up the mood, though, at the beginning painfully slow, and for giving a fine climax. The film is available on Neestream streaming platform. It shows intensely on how even today many Indian women spend their time cooking and cleaning the house all day, with the men in the family bossing around told. The first one-hour was difficult to watch – it showed in detail the cooking done by the housewife from the breakfast…
