Rudabai Stepwell, Adalaj, Ahmedabad
A UNESCO world heritage site and the most famous stepwell in Gujarat is the Rani ki Vav (Queen’s Stepwell). It is about 130 kilometres from Ahmedabad, and, we didn’t have the time to travel. Instead, we visited the smaller one – called the Rudabai Stepwell at Adalaj, this was a few kilometres from Ahmedabad city. In the Gujarati language, the stepwell is called a vav, (leading down to the level of water). It was built in 1498 for a beautiful lady known as Rani Roopba (or Roodabai), who was the wife of Rana Veer Singh of the Vaghela dynasty, a Hindu ruler, upon his death the well was completed by…

Swati Snacks, Ahmedabad
Gujarat is famous for the variety of its vegetarian snacks. Today, we went to one of the well-known places in Ahmedabad city – Swati Snacks at Ambli Road. This is a restaurant with minimum modern-decor and the snacks were mouth-watering every bite. Below are a few of the snacks we ordered and shared between us. The pricing was on the higher side, but considering the ambience and the hygienic preparation in the open-kitchen you won’t mind paying.

Tropic of Cancer and Bhuj
After a day at Rann Utsav, we were driving to Mundra port town. We noticed a board saying “Tropic of Cancer”, and, a photoshoot (see above) followed. The Tropic of Cancer, which is also referred to as the Northern Tropic, is the most northerly circle of latitude on Earth at which the Sun can be directly overhead. According to the rules of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, for a flight to compete for a round-the-world speed record, it must cover a distance no less than the length of the Tropic of Cancer, cross all meridians, and end on the same airfield where it started. Our next stop was Rakshak Van, Sarspar,…

Visit to the USA in 1999, my first!
Over the last two decades, I have travelled quite a few times to the USA. My first trip was in 1999 when I got invited by Microsoft Corporation, USA for one of their premier event that was happening in downtown Seattle and that was obviously the memorable one. I was excited to be travelling to the United States and that too to the headquarters of my idol Mr Bill Gates. Then, I never imagined I will be travelling in the next few years, many times to America, so I went around the country, coast to coast, visiting all the friends and family who lived there. I started my travel from…

HAL Aerospace Museum, Bangalore
In the last two decades, many a time especially when the old HAL airport in Bangalore was in use I have seen this museum, but never went inside. Probably, because the younger me was busy working and had little interest outside software? Nowadays, without any hesitation to spend time, I seem to drop into many of the tourist places. Only today, on the way back after my day meetings, I stopped in front of this museum and went in. The security guard stopped and pointed me to the ticket counter. I bought an entry ticket for Rs.50 (US 70 cents) and a separate one at Rs.20 for my smartphone camera.…
