Last weekend, while walking along Marina Beach, something caught my eye. From a distance, it felt like Madras’ quiet answer to Bombay’s Queen’s Necklace. No lights or diamonds here. Just the outline of a curved lake, people, and the evening sky, stitched together by the sea breeze.
What looked like an oasis turned out to be rainwater collected on the sand. From afar, it was beautiful and almost deceptive. Up close, it was ordinary, like most good illusions. That contrast made me pause and take it in. The first two pictures below capture this magic from a distance.
The others are closer, from the sand and near the water, where Marina is at its most honest. Clicked on Saturday evening, 13 December 2025, near the Kannagi Statue, Marina Beach, Chennai.
