Sweetheart had the potential to be a charming Gen-Z love story but ended up as a haphazard mix of scenes with a few enjoyable moments. The lead pair, Rio Raj and Gopika Ramesh, share good chemistry and have performed well in their roles. Director Swineeth S. Sukumar shows promise but needs more clarity in storytelling. Overall, Mangoidiots gives it a Raw for the few engaging bits.
The story revolves around a young couple with contrasting personalities who break up, only to be unexpectedly thrown together by a sudden turn of events. The film attempts a modern narrative style but soon drifts into a predictable and clichéd screenplay. Initially, the non-linear storytelling seemed refreshing, and we appreciated the editor for keeping the easily understandable background scenes brief. However, this was short-lived as the same sequences later played out in full, making the entire exercise feel redundant and frustrating.
Interestingly, more than the lead couple, it was the hero’s friend, played by Arunachaleswaran Pa, who stole the show. His recurring scenes of pleading with his girlfriend (for a ten-minute wait) over the phone while she waits at his apartment struck a chord with the audience and provided much-needed humour. Had the director given similar attention to the other supporting characters, particularly the heroine’s father, the film could have lived up to its title. Instead, the father’s character felt outdated, reminiscent of a stereotypical strict dad from the 1970s, while the heroine’s grandfather felt entirely out of place. Reshmi Karthigeyan, as the hero’s sister, had a limited role but delivered convincingly. Redin Kingsley appears in a guest role for a song that was unnecessary and crass, spoiling the tone of what was otherwise a decent love story.
The film is produced by Yuvan Shankar Raja, who also composed the music. Unfortunately, his work here feels uninspired and indistinguishable from his previous compositions.
