Qatar National Library is a modern book haven in Doha

During my trip to Doha, Qatar, in the last few days (November 21-26, 2022) for the FIFA World Cup, I explored a mix of eateries and city attractions. Being someone who loves books and libraries, my first stop was the Qatar National Library. The library looked impressive in the photographs I had seen earlier, and it did not disappoint.

Reaching the library was easy as it has a dedicated metro station nearby. We went there around late morning but were informed that the library would close early that day to facilitate the metro line availability for FIFA World Cup matches happening in a nearby stadium.

First Impressions

As you walk from the metro station, the building’s simplicity immediately catches your attention. The structure, a modern blend of glass and cement, stands out with its muted grey tones. Once inside, the library greets you with an unobstructed view of its spacious interiors. It is a marvel of modern architecture with clean, straight lines and an open layout.

Inside the Library

The shelves, stacked with books, are arranged at various levels, almost resembling a staircase. It creates a visually stunning effect while remaining functional. We were told that the library houses a wide collection, including over 500,000 ebooks, periodicals, and videos.

What stood out to me was how accessible the library is for locals. All Qatari Citizens and Resident Permit holders are eligible for free registration, which allows them to borrow books and access the digital collection. This thoughtful initiative makes the library not just a place to visit but a part of everyday life for the residents of Doha.
