The Lost Continent by Bill Bryson

If you have been reading my blog for some time, you know that I am a fan of Bill Bryson’s books. I feel none other than Bryson can take a boring Travelogue and make its humour. In this book “The Lost Continent”  (which I believe is his second book and the one which brought him recognition) released in 1989, Bryson returns to his home country (USA) after living for a decade in Britain. He retraces the route his father used to take the family during vacations. He recollects how his father usually skips all the interesting spots and opts for the most boring places just because they cost less. In…

    Shakespeare by Bill Bryson

I have never been into reading poetry, poems or other forms of heavy literature. I have only read Shakespeare’s works in few chapters in English textbooks and seeing the plays in few movies. So why did I pick this book, which is a biography of Shakespeare – it was simply because of “Bill Bryson” name in the title. I have enjoyed so much his previous books “The Thunderbolt Kid” and  “Neither here Nor there“, that the minute I saw his name I bought the book. Anyways after buying it, I decided to read it. Yes, English is a funny language, as my favourite writer the American-Britisher Mr Bill Bryson emphasises in his book “The Mother Tongue“. What are they, then? Guinea Pigs originate from the Andes of South America, and they are rodents from the cavy family. They were (probably) easier to breed so were popular with scientists who experimented on them with various treatments and drugs in the 19th and 20th centuries. Nowadays, labs…

This year (2016) due to Chennai floods in December, the annual book fair got postponed. It’s happening this week – June 1st to 13th 2016. I made my customary visit to the book fair today with my son. This year the book fair is happening in the spacious Island Grounds near Victory War Memorial where the annual trade fair happens in January & February of every year.
