Having spent decades building software and working closely with business leaders, I’ve learnt to look beyond the noise. This ten-minute video by Sal Khan does exactly that. It focuses not on hype, but on the real and practical role AI can play—especially in education.
In this thoughtful conversation with BBC’s Katty Kay, Sal Khan of Khan Academy shares why he believes AI can be a genuine force for good in the classroom.
Here are a few points that stayed with me:
1️⃣ In a future where AI is part of every classroom, human teachers will not become less relevant. In fact, their role will grow—guiding, supporting, and connecting with students in ways AI cannot.
2️⃣ At Khan Academy, the team is encouraged to use ChatGPT to refine and improve their proposals. Not to write them from scratch. The focus is on better thinking, not replacing it.
3️⃣ Sal Khan gives a nice example from public life. President Obama, despite having access to top speechwriters, always brought in his own ideas. His speeches reflected his voice, not just polished words.
And one story felt very close to home:
⚕️ In a small rural village in India, an AI-powered doctor may not be perfect. But even a basic diagnosis and prescription could be a big step forward from what is available there today.
I am not brushing aside the risks that come with AI. But I do feel that fear often overshadows the quiet, meaningful progress already happening.
If you are feeling unsure about where all this is headed, give this video a watch. It left me feeling more grounded and hopeful. It might do the same for you.
