Time travel movies have always fascinated me, especially for the ‘what-if’ scenarios they present without the accompanying regrets. The latest entry in this genre is “The Present” (2024), a comedy sci-fi film from the perspective of kids trying to prevent their parents’ divorce. While I enjoyed it, I can only give it a Raw rating on the Mangoidiots scale, as it didn’t bring anything new to the table.
“The Present” (2024) reminded me of “See You Yesterday” (2019), which tackled serious issues like racism and gun violence. In contrast, this film is a standard family comedy with a time travel twist. Isla Fisher and Greg Kinnear deliver satisfying performances as the parents, while Shay Rudolph shines as their teenage daughter, especially in the film’s second half.
The youngest of the three kids, Taylor (played by Easton Rocket Sweda), struggles with human interaction and discovers his grandfather’s clock, which can send him back in time by a day. When he learns that his parents are planning to announce their separation at dinner, he teams up with his siblings to rekindle their parents’ love. Do they succeed? That’s the story. The film has many small, nice touches throughout, but the lack of any real twists or suspense prevents it from being truly memorable.
Overall, if you’re looking for a feel-good film that will make you chuckle in a few places, “The Present” is worth checking out.
