Generally, I like Vijay Antony‘s selection of stories but I was let down with this “Who did this” variety murder mystery. I tried to like the film but there was not one character with whom I could connect. The Cinematographer Sivakumar Vijayan and Director Balaji K Kumar were obsessed with showcasing their filmmaking skills rather than telling the story. The debut actor Meenakshi Chaudhary impresses us as the main lead, a model who chases fame and ambition. Kolai (2023) gets a rotten from mangoidiots.

The film starts off promisingly, with some stylish cinematography and atmospheric visuals. However, the story quickly falls apart, as the characters are underdeveloped and the plot is too predictable. The film also tries to be neo-noir, but the attempt fails, as the film lacks the dark and gritty atmosphere that is essential to the genre. The murder scene, flashbacks and the solution were too elementary, it reminded me of the films from the black-and-white era for its simplicity.

Vijay Antony with grey hair, looks smart but does nothing much. As a private investigator, he was given the familiar role of being brilliant, a workaholic, a broken marriage and a strong guilt on his shoulder. As a police officer, Ritika Singh‘s character contributes little more than a campus security. I am still wondering what the role of Raadhika Sarathkumar contributed, such a waste of talent. Please don’t get me talking about John Vijay‘s character as a disingenuous senior police officer.
