I loved the anthology of short films in Putham Pudhu Kaalai (2020). So, when Amazon Prime Video released its sequel as a mini-series titled Putham Pudhu Kaalai Vidiyaadhaa (புத்தம் புது காலை விடியாதா) I eagerly consumed it. Though it was not as good as the first one, two of the episodes in the mini-series were good.

Out of the five episodes, I felt the best was the first one. Titled Mugakavasa Mutham, it was about Police constables Murugan and Kuyuli who find the time to fall in love, during their patrolling assignment during the intensive lockdown in Chennai during the early days of the pandemic. Just like a flower growing out of a rock, the episode shows how a beautiful love story can emerge in the most demanding situation.  The three main lead actors Teejay Arunasalam as Murugan, Gouri G. Kishan as Kuyuli and Kalloori Vinoth as Murugan’s friend Farook have done a great job – excellent onscreen chemistry between Murugan and Kuyuli was brought out without any intimate scenes.

The second one titled Loners was also good. In these pandemic years, how true love can start online. Lijomol Jose of Jai Bhim (2021) has given a fantastic performance, she brings to life the character of a young working woman fighting her loneliness.

The third one titled Mouname Paarvayaai starring Nadhiya and Joju George capture the strained relationship between a middle-aged couple. It shows how the husband caring for his wife infected by COVID-19 can bring the two closer.

The fourth, The Mask talks about the important yet delicate topic of a same-sex relationship and coming out of the closet.

The fifth one, Nizhal Tharum Idham is about a lady grieving her father’s loss and coming to terms with it.
