In the Sivakarthikeyan starring Namma Veettu Pillai (2019), Director Pandiraj has stuck to the same formula of a large family with a kind-hearted & brave hero that had worked for him in the past. Last year’s Kadaikutty Singam (2018) too had numerous (family) relations shown, but it resonated well because of its strong emotions, in NMP it hasn’t worked out that well. As a result, the film feels like a routine village rivalry between the two rich families. To be fair, this was different from the reactions I heard around me in the cinema hall, the screenplay seems to have struck a chord with the audience, but not for me.

I was interested in this film for its brother-sister sentiment being played out extensively between Sivakarthikeyan and Aishwarya Rajesh – which has come out quite well on screen too. D. Imman‘s songs were average. Veteran director Bharathiraja suits the role of the family patriarch perfectly, and, similar was “Veedu” Archana as hero’s mother. Anu Emmanuel comes as Sivakarthikeyan’s love interest in an easily forgettable role. At the beginning of the film seeing Natraj (Nutty) as the antagonist and latter as hero’s brother-in-law I was expecting fireworks between him and the hero, but other than a scene and a fight, nothing else happens.

I liked the (reasonably) brisk pace of the screenplay with little time wasted on narrating the happenings and the climax which had little of fistfights and more of emotions.

PS: I am still wondering why Sivakarthikeyan didn’t go after those who killed his father (Samuthirakani) and before him why his father didn’t revenge for his friend’s murder?
