Today, while returning from Tirumala Tirupati to Chennai, I stopped for lunch at GRT Regency Hotel, Tiruttani. Considering the location, it appeared to be a fine hotel and their restaurant Amudham served a tasty meal and the service was good – I enjoyed the food.

While entering the restaurant, I noticed they had a big banner advertising for Ragi Koozh (Finger Millet Porridge, called as கேழ்வரகு  கஞ்சி அல்லது கேப்பை கூழ் in Tamil).  Priced at Rs.99 per cup, they had listed ten health benefits for the same. Reading the list it felt like, if you needed to drink a miracle cure, it should be a cup of Ragi porridge. They claim it to be a cure for Diabetes, Weight Loss, Reduce Cholesterol, Reverts Skin Ageing, Increases Lactation, Treats Anemia and more – I couldn’t think of any illness this can’t cure!

In South India, this breakfast drink is considered as a workers food as it is cheap to make, quick to eat (drink), and will keep you feeling full for hours. You will find it being sold on the road-side or on a bicycle, and generally the middle-class shun it due to lack of cleanliness in the preparation of items sold at these places.
