Over the last 3 decades, there have been various input methods (layouts) to enter Tamil. Tamil 99, a layout that involves typing consonants and vowels separately, all without pressing shift anytime. It was developed by an expert panel appointed by State Government of Tamil Nadu – the panel followed scientific principles to ensure speed and to reduce keyboard fatigue. I use this layout regularly for touch typing in all my mobile devices – Android & iOS – it is convenient and comes naturally for Tamil speakers. On a PC and iMac, I use a layout called “Anjal” that was developed by good friend Muthu Nedumaran of Murasu Systems, Malaysia – it works on transliteration basis, you type “a” to get “அ” and so on.  Some years back, TVS Electronics introduced a physical keyboard that supports Tamil 99.

Microsoft has recently implemented the Tamil 99 keyboard layout out of the box with Windows10. The feature is now in “Beta” – which can be used by anyone running Windows 10 if they opt to be in the Windows Insider program (details below). Those using the Tamil99 layout for their typing, please try and share your feedback on Windows 10’s feedback hub app. Tamil 99 keyboard is available both for physical keyboard typing and touch typing in tablet mode.
