    Kadaisi Vivasayi (2022)

Kadaisi Vivasayi (2022), meaning the last farmer, will surely impact you. It follows a slice of the life of an octogenarian farmer who leads a simple yet fulfilled life. The current trend in Kollywood is to show how noble and difficult the plight of farmers is, so I was expecting an emotionally draining film here, but Kadaisi Vivasiyi was brisk and fun to watch. Known for realistic films like Kaaka Muttai (2015), director M Manikandan has made this one too with little cinematic cliches. Enemy (2021)

For a movie about the onscreen clash of two popular Kollywood heroes Vishal and Arya, Enemy (2021) was unremarkable. It starts with two young boys, neighbours, going to the same school and playing together but grow up to be diagonally opposite personalities in life. Available on Sony Liv, it gets a Raw. While his loving father, a stereotypical character played by Thambi Ramaiah, wants Chozhan to lead a normal life, Chozhan takes up causes of common good for the community and fights for it…

    Sivaranjiniyum Innum Sila Pengalum (2019)

Directed by Vasanth S Sai, Sivaranjiniyum Innum Sila Pengalum (சிவரஞ்சனியும் இன்னும் சில பெண்களும்) had already won accolades when it premiered at several film festivals around the world. This is an anthology of three strong women from different time periods navigating individually their lives against odds. The characters have been derived from the works of famous Tamil writers Ashokamitran, Adhavan and Jeyamohan. It is heartening to see these unconventional films getting a wide audience through OTT platforms. SISP is available on Sony Liv and gets my Ripe rating. The first story happens in the 1980s; Saraswati is a docile wife ill-treated by her husband, suddenly getting the courage to question him…
