Uncle Frank (2020) is a period film about being a gay man in the 1970s in America’s South. It is narrated from the perspective of a young girl Beth of her Uncle Frank who is a college professor in New York City. The film progresses on expected lines but still was enjoyable due to a tight screenplay, perfect casting for the lead roles and some good acting. It is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Seeing the banner and the description I thought it will be another road trip across America movie. Instead, it was about the pain of a gay man and his yearning for the approval of his family. I would’ve loved to see the film explore the character of young Beth a little more, there was wasted opportunity there. The climax plays out nicely.
