After a long time, this film offers a more lifelike portrayal of a working couple and their love. The chemistry between Ashok Selvan and Preity Mukhundhan is the film’s highlight. Sadly, the first half is emotional and relatable, but the second half gets too cinematic and falls flat. Mangoidiots gives it a Ripe, not penalising it for the stupid climax.
Suriya and Iyal are a young married couple. Both work in the hospitality industry, with demanding jobs, and have little time together. Suriya remembers his promise to Iyal about helping her open a homestay in a hill resort. The couple sets out to do so and runs into local political and power disturbances that threaten their lives. Do they come out alive? That is the story.
The first hour of the film was superb. Ashok Selvan and Preity Mukhundhan brought their characters to life flawlessly. The dialogues, even during their arguments, were well written. Unlike in most films, here Iyal is an independent woman with dreams and hopes of her own, and Suriya supports her unconditionally. When Suriya says to Iyal, “You are my life”, it comes out genuine.
Even just before the climax, when the inspector and the MLA discover a packed getaway suitcase, the film was relatable. But then came the last fight sequence, which was too long and felt like we were watching a completely different film. What is the logic for the hero, till then a responsible married man, to start putting down hundreds of armed men? How is it even conceivable? That is beyond my comprehension.
Sabumon Abdusamad as Lawyer Martin and Mahadevan Ganesh as Inspector Thavasi have delivered their roles very well. From the very first frame, the inspector shows his lust and bad intentions towards Iyal, and Mahadevan Ganesh brings this out very well.
Director R. Kaarthikeyan has given Tamil cinema a married couple who will be remembered for a long time.
