Rarely does Tamil cinema manage to deliver a gripping execution of a familiar storyline, but debutant director Sidharth Vishwanath achieves exactly that. The film explores the journey of an innocent man who must navigate life in a lawless prison controlled by a gangster. With its sharp screenplay that avoids unnecessary emotions or spoon-feeding explanations, the movie treats its audience as intelligent. Mangoidiots gives the film a Ripe rating for its impactful storytelling.

The story revolves around an inquiry commission investigating a deadly riot at Madras Central Jail in 1999. The investigation reveals how the prison was under the iron grip of a ruthless gangster, leading to the appointment of a Superintendent of Police to clean up the chaos. In the midst of this turmoil, an innocent man gets ensnared in the system, adding a personal layer to the drama.

This film marks a turning point for RJ Balaji, both as a hero and an actor. Two scenes stood out for me: in the first, he confronts the dreaded gangster, played by Selvaraghavan, with raw, fearless anger that feels deeply personal. In the second, much later, he exudes confidence and defiance while testifying before an inquiry judge, sitting cross-legged with an attitude that speaks volumes. This is undoubtedly his career-best performance, and I wish him continued success.

Saniya Iyappan plays the hero’s love interest with grace. Her understated and grounded demeanour perfectly fits the role, offering a refreshing contrast to the film’s intense backdrop. After RJ Balaji and Selvaraghavan, Karunas delivers a noteworthy performance as a police officer. The supporting cast, including Ravichander Raghavendra, Balaji Sakthivel, and Natarajan Subramaniam, adds depth, with even the minor characters feeling well-detailed. The background score by Christo Xavier enhances the movie’s tension and pace, keeping viewers on edge.

However, a word of caution: the film is laden with violence and gore, which may leave a lasting impression and unsettle some viewers.
