Vishnu Vishal stars in Aaryan, a cop thriller. He plays DCP Nambi, who is after a serial killer whose first murder itself happens in an unexpected way. Though the film has a few good moments, it doesn’t manage to recreate the magic of Ratsasan (2018). Mangoidiots gives it a Raw.

Shraddha Srinath appears as Nayana, a popular talk show host. During a live episode, a novelist takes everyone in the studio hostage and commits his first murder on air. Before doing it, he announces that he will kill five more people in the next five days. The responsibility to stop him falls on DCP Nambi and his team. The film also touches briefly on Nambi’s personal life and his strained relationship with his wife, played by Maanasa Choudhary.

The studio sequence sets up an engaging premise and raises expectations. But after the first murder, the story loses its sharpness and settles into a predictable pattern. The investigation scenes feel underwhelming, and the tension between the police and the killer doesn’t sustain the excitement.

Selvaraghavan plays the novelist whose work goes unrecognised by the world. He has done justice to the role. However, the screenplay gives little space for Vishnu Vishal or the other cops to shine, limiting their emotional range. The same applies to Shraddha Srinath, who has too little screen time to make an impact. Since the film offers hardly any background on the victims, it becomes difficult to feel connected to their fate, which weakens the story’s grip.

The film will be available for streaming on Netflix.
