Yesterday was a hot summer Sunday in Chennai. In the evening, I went for a brisk walk along the Marina Beach – clocked over 6.5 kilometres. That gave me a small sense of achievement. But as expected, it left me tired and sweating. I felt like having something refreshing.

Instead of the usual beachside stalls, I walked across the road to Museum Café, which is located at the intersection of VP Raman Road and Marina Beach Road, near to the Vivekananda House. The café is on the first floor of the State Commissionerate for the Differently Abled. While there seems to be a lift and wheelchair access, I took the stairs, so I didn’t check the lift (sorry!). The building has ample parking space for both cars and scooters.

The café is spacious, air-conditioned, and offers a pleasant view facing Marina Beach on the east side. It can comfortably seat around 40 to 50 people. When I went around 5:30 PM, there were two staff members and about ten guests seated in a circle – it seemed like a local group having a discussion.

The café is run by the Hot Breads “Winners” group and is part of an initiative to train and empower people with disabilities. Hats off to the Tamil Nadu government and the partnering organisations for making this happen. These efforts help integrate marginalised communities into everyday society and make us view them not as separate, but as part of us.

I ordered a lime juice (₹50) and a Veg Fantasy Pizza (₹159). The prices were very reasonable, especially considering the location and setup. While the Marina beachside pushcarts offer a wide range of snacks, I find their hygiene to be hit or miss. Here, you get a clean environment, AC comfort, and good food quality.

It took about 15 minutes for my order, as they oven-baked the pizza fresh from their prepared dough, not preheated or microwaved. The lime juice was freshly squeezed, just salt and a little sugar – nothing else. The pizza was soft inside, with crispy edges – just the way I like it. The staff were friendly and the service was good.

One more pleasant surprise – the café has a small free book corner. It had only a few books, but still a nice touch. The cafe space is also available for private events like book launches and gatherings. I hope more people use it.

Unfortunately, being a government building, there are no eye-catching signs to attract beach visitors. On Sundays, the ground floor is completely empty, making the entrance look dull and uninviting. A bit of signage and lighting could make a big difference.

In the same building is the Museum of Possibilities, which showcases the creative works of differently abled individuals. I didn’t visit it this time, but maybe I’ll check it out during my next walk.

Disclosure: I write reviews about restaurants that I have visited and paid in full. There were no sponsorship or advertisement, or commission of any sort involved in this post.
