Brother (2024) is a Tamil film that delivers a good mix of humour, emotions, and family drama, making it an entertaining watch. However, it’s best to keep your expectations in check, as few scenes are a bit silly. Despite this, it remains a classic M Rajesh film. The movie revolves around Jayam Ravi, who shines in his role. For its entertainment value, Mangoidiots rates it as Ripe.
Jayam Ravi plays Karthik, a principled young man whose habit of questioning wrongdoings prevents him from graduating and securing a stable job. Unlike Ramanujam from Anniyan (2005), Karthik tackles issues with a comedic touch. He loves and respects his sister Anandhi, who is portrayed by Bhumika Chawla. Karthik’s approach complicates his life and his sister’s, leading to a series of events that need resolution.
The first half features comedy from VTV Ganesh, who tones down his usual loudness, and his character “Caretaker Keshav” is genuinely amusing. The large dining room scene with the entire family is delightful, especially Saranya Ponvannan‘s English dialogue delivery, which adds to the humour. The second half shifts abruptly to a serious emotional tone, which is typical for this genre. The scene where the hero’s young niece and nephew cry for their father is well-executed and evokes sympathy. However, the subsequent school play is predictably clichéd. Nutty Natarajan, Seetha, and others have limited roles, while Priyanka Mohan plays Karthik’s love interest in a predictable manner.
The “Makkamishi” song, sung by Paal Dabba & Dacalt and composed by Harris Jayaraj, stands out with its choreography featuring international dancers and unique visuals, making it a memorable piece.
