Vadakkupatti Ramasamy (2024) – Comedy that struggles to find its footing

Vadakkupatti Ramasamy starring Santhanam, treads a confused path from the very start. The film seems unsure of whether it wants to be a black comedy, a satire, or a period piece, resulting in a screenplay that, to put it mildly, feels disjointed. Yet, despite its shortcomings, the movie manages to keep you engaged for its two-hour-plus runtime, thanks to a few genuinely funny moments. For this reason, Mangoidiots rates it as a Raw. The film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The story revolves around Ramasamy, played by Santhanam, who exploits a local temple for his personal gain. His actions lead to a confrontation with the local tahsildar (revenue officer), resulting in the temple being shut down by a government order. The plot follows Ramasamy’s efforts to get the temple reopened. Amidst this, we are introduced to two local knuckle-headed chieftains and a simple-minded Army officer, who add layers to the chaotic narrative. Megha Akash performs her role well, while Sean Roldan‘s music does its job in supporting the film’s tone. Lollu Sabha Maaran and Lollu Sabha Seshu deliver excellent performances, bringing much-needed life to their characters. Mottai Rajendran, though in a brief role, leaves a mark.

However, the film falters in its portrayal of the villain, played by Tamizh. The character lacks the forcefulness needed to elevate the conflict, and the inclusion of too many subplots only complicates the narrative further. Had these elements been handled better, “Vadakkupatti Ramasamy” could have been a more enjoyable watch.
