Badhaai Ho (2018) was a surprise hit of last year. For giving an engaging film all you need is an unconventional story that everyone can relate to, a right cast, an honest love and then you deliver the whole thing with humor.  Kudos to the writers and to Director Amit Ravindrenath Sharma.

Imagine this, you are a 25-year-old, doing well in your job, have a younger brother studying in high-school, a steady girlfriend, a loving mother and a caring father who will retire soon. Now, you are told that your mother is being pregnant and you will have a sibling two decades younger to you. How will you handle this in your social circle?

Switch over your imagination to the next character. You are 55-year-old officer with the railways, a loving wife, a caring mother, two well-behaved sons, a comfortable house, a car and regarded to be an example of a family man by your extended family and friends. Your elder son is in love and will soon be getting married. Now, you hear the news that your wife is pregnant. How will you share this ’embarrassing’ news to your friends and family, start with telling your mother that you were ‘careless’ at this age?

In a gist, that’s what was Badhaai Ho! Everyone growing up in a large Indian family can relate to this story easily and director has exploited that emotion well. Ayushmann Khurrana, Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao have all done their roles splendidly.

If you haven’t watched it yet, a fine film to watch with your family & friends – it is kids friendly and clean comedy. Available in Hotstar India.
