I didn’t expect to like this film, but I did!

Let me explain, What We Did on Our Holiday (2014) is a British film, a clean comedy, about a dysfunctional family and three kids. The first hour of the film was dull & makes you question your choice – if you are able to plough through, you see the kids’ takeover and it becomes enjoyable. The film is available on Amazon Prime Video and manages a ‘Ripe’ rating because of the last half-an-hour. Please don’t look for much logic here, just go with the flow and you will like it too.

Doug and Abi, a couple in London with three lovely kids, are in the middle of their separation when the family gets invited to Doug’s father Gordie’s 75th birthday in the Scottish highlands. The two adults try to hide their feud, train the kids to lie and put forward a happy face in front of their grand-dad and Doug’s elder brother’s family. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned and everything unravels as you will expect in this genre. Till here, the movie was predictable and boring. Then, Gordie takes the three kids for a few hours to his favourite beach when something that was easy to guess happens, but the reaction from the children was totally unexpected and the film suddenly finds itself in high gear. The three kids were brilliant, especially the middle one, a young boy, whose dialogues were sharp and witty. The little girl was adorable. The two make the film a rewarding experience.

There was little to say about the characters played by Rosamund Pike and David Tennant, so I will give it a pass.
