The Girl with a Bracelet aka La fille au bracelet (2019) is a french courtroom drama. It was about a teenage girl on trial for killing her best friend based on circumstantial evidence. The movie was not about who killed the girl, but the process of what happens when you are accused of a murder and how it affects your family. It was well taken and I enjoyed the film. I am happy to give it a Mangoidiots rating of ‘Ripe’.

Be aware that there are visuals of blood and a dead body in the film. And there is obscenity in the dialogues.

For a film that carefully avoids becoming a thriller, Director Stéphane Demoustier has maintained the momentum throughout. Superb performance by Melissa Guers as the teenage girl Lise Bataille, who is going through untold emotions and fear. In the first hour, during the questioning by the prosecutor Lise comes out frighteningly cold which makes us curious about how the case will go. Similarly, Lise impresses us in her speech in the climax. Appearing as the parents to Melissa, Roschdy Zem and Chiara Mastroianni add to the narrative by their well-round acting.

I liked the closing remarks by the defence lawyer when she says (paraphrasing) “We are here to judge the evidence and who committed the murder, we are not here to impose our moral opinion on this young girl, as we don’t understand the world and feelings of the youth, we have no idea“. This film was a remake of a popular Argentian movie titled The Accused (2018).
