The Roja Muthiah Research Library, in partnership with Onemai Foundation, hosted a Typography workshop and conference that left attendees with fascinating insights into the world of typography. The event featured some of the most talented speakers in the industry, including Dr. D Udayakumar, who designed the Indian Rupee symbol, Dr. GV Sreekumar, the head of the prestigious IDC School of Design at IIT Bombay, the renowned Type Designer & Font Engineer Mr. Tharique Azeez, and my friend Mr. Muthu Nedumaran, who has designed dozens of fonts for Asian languages that ship in every Mac & iPhone.
Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the history of typography, including which Indian language was the first to be printed by the Portuguese. They also explored the anatomy and DNA of a typeface and discovered whether modern typeface designers are inventing new styles or rediscovering centuries-old designs.
The event also delved into the power of typography to tell stories and evoke emotions. Attendees learned how the right font and style can kindle emotions and even be used for meditation using just text. The talks tackled the question of whether different scripts and languages can coexist harmoniously in the same font-face.
Overall, the Typography workshop was an incredible opportunity to learn from some of the most talented and experts in the field.
