    Manmadha Leelai (2022)

Rated for 18+ due to the french-kiss scenes, Manmadha Leelai (2022) directed by Venkat Prabhu is a comedy story about extra-marital affairs. The film narrates the happenings in two time periods (2010 and 2022) when the hero has illicit relationships and does his best to escape uncaught. The film gets my Raw rating. Ashok Selvan has done a great job of playing the roles of a young college student and a middle-aged father, kudos to him.  The three female leads Samyukta H, Riya S, and Smruthi V are fine cast for their roles and are impressive. The thirty minutes before the climax was slow and dull, if this portion was…

    The Adam Project (2022)

There are different types of time travel movies – some are like the classic Back to the Future (1985) or the Primer (2004) that appear to be based on good science, some others are made just for fun like the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) or the Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) and some are in between like The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009). The recent film on Netflix, The Adam Project (2022) wants to be all of the above, as a result, it was none of them and was forgettable. It gets my default rating of Raw, as it left me with no particular impression. A fighter pilot Adam…

    The Kashmir Files (2022)

For the last few days, the recently released film, The Kashmir Files (2022) by Director Vivek Agnihotri has been making waves across India. The movie is running houseful. These are not surprising – In India, the mention of ‘Kashmir’ always invokes an emotional response – every Indian has an opinion on what went wrong in the state and how it should be fixed. The film works as a (fictional) biography of the protagonist, but the narration was slow paced, and the screenplay was unimaginative, due to which, as a movie it fell short of what it could’ve been. Unlike what critics say, the film does display the militants’ point of…

    Mandibules (2020)

Mandibules (2020) is a French comedy about two petty thieves finding a giant fly and trying to train it for their personal gain. Reading the description, I had expectations for the film but it turned out to be routine. The film exhibited as part of the French film festival by ICAF gets my Raw rating. When driving a stolen car to collect a parcel, Jean-Gab finds a giant fly in the trunk. His friend Manu, gives an idea of training the fly and using that to earn money. The two go in search of a place to house the fly and do the training. Initially, they use a mobile home…
